INTO MATH CALIFORNIA

Into Math California is a TK–Algebra 1 mathematics curriculum built on California’s Mathematics Framework and Big Ideas, and available in both print and digital formats. Each lesson develops conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application through student-centered, discourse-rich instruction aligned to the Standards for Mathematical Practice. For advanced middle school students, an Accelerated Pathway is available to prepare students for Algebra 1.

Into Math California is built on the California Mathematics Framework and Big Ideas, delivering discourse-rich instruction with embedded Drivers of Investigation, Standards for Mathematical Practice, and Content Connections interwoven throughout the program. Teachers can see how each lesson connects to framework priorities at point-of-use, without needing to consult separate appendices or supplementary guides.

Into Math California includes both print and digital instructional materials for teachers and students across grade levels. Major components include the Teacher’s Guides, Student Books, Practice Plus Workbook, editable lesson presentation slides, leveled small-group activities, games, and manipulative kits. Planning resources include the Implementation Guide, California Standards Map, Scope and Sequence, Language Development Resource Guide, and editable lesson plans. Digitally, the program is delivered through HMH Ed^® and includes Waggle^® for personalized adaptive practice, HMH Classcraft^™ for interactive whole-class presentations, a robust assessment suite with actionable data reports, and CAASPP test prep designed to mirror the rigor, structure, and item types of CAASPP Math. Print and digital components are designed to work together, giving teachers flexibility in how they plan and deliver instruction.

Every lesson in Into Math California follows a consistent, research-based instructional framework of Get Ready, Learn, and Assess.

Get Ready: Students gain an understanding of the lesson objective and set personal learning goals.

After whole-class instruction, students enter a rotation for differentiated small-group and independent practice. This predictable structure helps teachers deliver focused, coherent lessons while giving every student consistent entry points for learning and reflection.

Into Math California supports mathematical discourse and collaboration through structured language routines, peer modeling, collaborative activities, and open-ended problem solving. 

Math Language Routines (MLRs) provide a research-based means to increase academic rigor and develop academic language. Routines include:

• Clarify, Critique, and Correct
• Information Gap
• Co-Craft Questions and Problems

Peer Coach Videos model the MLRs using real students to provide clear, step-by-step demonstrations of effective practices. 

World of Math activities connect math to history, culture, careers, and everyday life. Students engage in discourse with peers and solve problems together. 

Module Projects are hands-on, open-ended problems that explore the module’s Big Idea. Students collaborate and apply math using data from real-world scenarios.

Into Math California incorporates manipulatives and visual models throughout lessons to help students build mathematical understanding and move from concrete experience toward abstract reasoning. Sense-making tasks open lessons through exploration and discourse to further strengthen conceptual understanding. The Teacher’s Guide provides a detailed, lesson-by-lesson list of manipulatives and materials needed to support planning, and the manipulative kits include these materials with quantities sized for partner, group, or individual use. 

Into Math California is a task-based, discourse-rich program that supports Building Thinking Classrooms^® practices by placing student thinking at the center of instruction. Lessons begin with Spark Your Learning tasks that activate prior knowledge and challenge students to think critically. Lessons continue with Learn tasks with teachers guiding students through reasoning rather than demonstrating procedures. Open Middle^® problems, authored by Robert Kaplinsky, require students to try, revise, and persist as they navigate multiple solution strategies. All three task types are well-suited for work in groups at vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS). The Teacher’s Guide includes language routines to keep students thinking and engaged in mathematical discourse. Teachers implementing Building Thinking Classrooms do not need to create separate thinking tasks or redesign their curriculum, since Into Math California's lesson structure already supports these practices.

Into Math California offers extensive differentiated instruction and intervention support through both print and digital resources. Module Prerequisite Checks assess prerequisite concepts for the upcoming lessons to help teachers determine student readiness and assign intervention as needed. After whole-group instruction, the Quick Check provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support. Almost There tabletop mini-lessons guide small groups, with instructions and suggested questions built into the teacher side of each mini-lesson. Waggle delivers personalized adaptive practice, powered by a skill-based AI engine that adjusts in real time to meet each student’s needs. These layered supports give teachers a clear, data-driven path to reach every learner at every stage of the lesson.

Into Math California supports multilingual learners through a comprehensive system of Key Routines, academic vocabulary resources, Math Language Routines (MLRs), point-of-use scaffolds, and embedded teaching strategies found in every Teacher’s Guide. Developed by Dr. Kate Kinsella, Key Routines foster a supportive environment where ML students engage in meaningful partner conversations. ELSF experts guided HMH curriculum developers to address the linguistic and cultural needs of English learners. These layered supports give teachers clear, ready-to-use strategies that build both math understanding and language confidence for every multilingual student.

Into Math California is available in Spanish through ¡Arriba las Matemáticas! California. Every teacher and student resource available in English is also available in Spanish, allowing districts to implement dual language and biliteracy models with confidence. ¡Arriba las Matemáticas! is a true transadaptation rather than a direct translation, with Spanish materials adapted to support authentic mathematical understanding, engagement, and accessibility for Spanish-speaking learners while maintaining alignment with the English program. Teachers moving between English and Spanish instruction can use bridging resources and cross-linguistic connections to maintain instructional continuity and rigor across both languages.

Into Math California includes a complete system of assessments covering where students are starting, how they are progressing, and what they need next. Assessment types include beginning, middle, and end-of-year Benchmark Assessments; module-level Prerequisite Checks; lesson-level Quick Checks; Module Projects that engage students in Depth of Knowledge level 4 tasks; and Module Tests at the end of each module. When assessments are taken digitally on HMH Ed, teachers can access robust reporting options including Assessment, Standards, Grouping, and Program Activity Reports, with optional integration of NWEA MAP®Growth™ data. For teachers who want even more assessment options, HMH AI Tools includes math practice and quiz generators for unlimited formative and summative assessments that can be translated into any language.
