HMH’s vision to usher in a new era of dynamic learning starts in the workplace. Our company celebrates the knowledge, experience, and perspectives of the educators and students we serve. Our commitment to helping all students succeed is the foundation on which our products and services are built.
This focus shapes our culture and helps us come together to lead, create, and innovate to better serve students, educators, and school communities.
While our purpose-driven work draws people in, most will tell you that it’s the people they work with that keep them here and it’s our shared drive and commitment that sets us apart. We care deeply about each other, and we care just as much about the level of performance required to achieve our purpose.
At HMH, we attract, hire, and retain talent from all backgrounds and with a range of experience, nurture a workplace where everyone can thrive, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations and collaboration. We believe that it is through learning that people find their voices, connect with others, and create innovative and impactful learning solutions.
To develop high quality instructional materials that resonate with students’ experiences and connect to their lives, we draw upon employee experts from a diverse set of backgrounds that bring unique knowledge and experience to the creation of instructional materials to enhance student engagement, understanding and academic achievement.
Our global HMH community includes employees located in Canada, India, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, China, and the United States. By working together, we empower and inspire each other, leveraging different perspectives and expertise to create innovative education solutions that help teachers create growth for all students.
We are always looking to increase the strength of HMH - our employee base - and grow our talent pipeline through partnerships with external recruitment partners, direct sourcing, and leveraging relationships.
I used to think that I had to become a different person at work. I had to be this model of what I thought professionalism was, and it didn’t include all of me. Now I know that I come to a job where I’m fully seen. I walk through the door as I am.

HMH’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are formed around shared interests and life experiences. Our ERGs support staff development, strengthen our teams, and create space for employees to bring their whole selves to work. Their work includes increasing belonging, reviewing programs, supporting the hiring of new team members, and building awareness of growth opportunities and activities across HMH. ERGs are voluntary and open to everyone. All employees are welcome to join the groups aligned with their interests and experiences.
HMH values learning and professional development for all employees. We offer a variety of programs, platforms and learning opportunities to empower employees at all levels. Whether employees are looking to enhance their skills through external training platforms, explore new areas and create connections through our established internal mentoring program, or participate in internal discussions and trainings, HMH provides resources and support to help employees achieve their goals.
I love volunteering in person with my current colleagues and meeting new ones. Bonding over something other than work really helps to build stronger connections.

At HMH, volunteerism and giving back to communities around the world is part of our culture and our DNA. Employees are encouraged to participate in these efforts through our spring season of service, our annual companywide Volunteer Week, paid time off to volunteer throughout the year and our matching gifts program. On an annual basis, almost 2,000 HMH employees serve more than 16,000 students through 7,200+ volunteer hours.
Much of HMH’s volunteerism and community engagement is driven by our Cares Councils, employee-led groups that support local community service. Most recently, employees located in Pune, India formed HMH’s 11th Cares Council and have since led several engaging projects including a successful blood donation drive, a tree planting drive, and an in-school project that benefited over 200 local students.
Volunteering allows us to better understand the needs of our communities and reminds us how a small contribution of time and energy can make a meaningful difference to the community while enriching our lives.

We are a company with nearly 200 years of innovations, from being the first to bring American literature into the classroom in 1882 to using artificial intelligence in our solutions today. We believe innovation starts with empathy and flows from human-centered design. To create exceptional value for our customers, we need to not only understand our customer experience but also proactively imagine what is possible—and then implement it, without fear of failure. When we do fail, we fail fast and apply our newfound learning to the next innovative product or service we imagine.
