Eating gives our bodies energy to play, grow, and stay healthy. It's fun to try different foods, whether it is sweet fruits or crunchy vegetables. Below are five days of reading lessons that explore food and how it is important in our lives.

  • Think about how you help cook at home. Draw a picture of yourself cooking with family.
  • Using one or more action words, write to complete this sentence: I _____ with my family.

Project: Make a mug

  • Draw a cylinder for a mug and cut it out.
  • Cut a C shape for the handle and tape it on.
  • Color to “fill” your mug with your favorite drink.

Choose an activity to extend the fun.

Response writing: Write a recipe card

  • Review the recipe for pizza from the book.
  • Create a recipe card for your own pizza recipe, making changes to the recipe. Maybe use a different bread or add toppings to your pizza.

Project: Design a tomato label

  • Look at the labels of tomato products on pages 2 and 12.
  • Design a new label for the bottle, can, or jar.
  • Draw pictures and write words to tell what is inside. Add bright colors and lines.

Let's review

This week, you've read about food and how it is important in our lives. Today, read a story about friends who share a love of food.

Extend the fun with an activity.

Hands-on activity: Make an ad

Family support

Make a new recipe! Work together to find a new recipe, or rediscover an old favorite. Read the recipe together and decide who will do which steps. Write a few sentences about what was easy or hard about making the recipe and whether you liked what you made. Share photos of your creation on social media or draw a picture to display at home.
