HMH Go Math!^® K-6

Go Math! is a Grades K–6 comprehensive mathematics curriculum designed to guide students toward deeper conceptual understanding, fluency in mathematical procedures, and proficiency with real-world applications.

The research-based 5E lesson design—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—purposefully embeds time for differentiation, collaboration, guided and independent practice, and formative assessment as students work toward mastery. The program includes Waggle personalized adaptive practice, a suite of assessments to help teachers monitor student progress, and exclusive on-demand professional support through Teacher’s Corner, all accessible on HMH Ed.

Go Math! organizes instruction through a chapter-based structure built around the 5E lesson model. Each chapter opens with Launch Activities that introduce students to the overarching domain, present an exploratory problem, and include a Math Talk question for partner or group discussion. These activities build schema that students connect to as they learn new concepts. Each chapter also includes a Show What You Know diagnostic to assess prior knowledge and a Vocabulary Builder page that prepares students with review and preview words before lessons begin.

Practice and Homework pages, including a set of Spiral Review questions, further reinforce previously taught concepts and procedures throughout the year.

Go Math! leads with conceptual investigations and tasks, followed by lessons that include scaffolded examples and modeling, and a variety of practice formats that gradually fade support until students can perform independently.

In the Explore phase, students engage with an interactive, scaffolded activity based on a real-world scenario—Listen and Draw in Grades K–2 or Unlock the Problem in Grades 3–5—using step-by-step modeling, guided examples, and Math Talk to build conceptual understanding. Procedural fluency is developed through Daily Routines, Fluency Builder activities, Path to Fluency, and Waggle, which builds fluency with procedures on a foundation of conceptual understanding so that students become skillful in applying them flexibly over time.

Go Math! integrates the Mathematical Practices across every phase of instruction, embedding reasoning and problem-solving throughout each lesson.

During the Elaborate phase, On Your Own and Problem-Solving problems require students to explain their thinking and provide evidence of their reasoning with increased independence, stimulating higher-order thinking. Features such as Share and Show, One Way/Another Way, and Math Talk engage students in solving tasks that allow multiple entry points and varied solution strategies, and in making connections among mathematical representations to deepen understanding of concepts and procedures. 

Go Math! embeds research-based Mathematical Language Routines throughout instruction to support deeper understanding through high-quality discourse. These routines provide daily opportunities for students to listen, speak, read, and write about mathematics at all proficiency levels while regularly applying the Mathematical Practices.

Routines such as Three Reads and Stronger and Clearer Each Time give students structured support for explaining, reasoning, and refining their responses based on feedback. Math Talk prompts appear across all lesson phases, and Launch Activities provide a low-pressure context for students to collaborate, explore multiple solution approaches, and discuss their mathematical thinking with partners or groups.

Go Math! provides both physical and digital manipulatives so students can make sense of mathematics, express relationships, and connect concepts to procedures across different mathematical contexts. Concrete and digital manipulatives help students make sense of situations, solve problems, and check their reasoning. Teachers gain insight into students’ understanding by observing which tools students choose and how they use them.

During the Share and Show activity in the Explain phase, students use manipulatives, math drawing, Math Boards, and Math Talk to work through problems and explain their methods and reasoning. The Digital Toolbox (iTools) extends this exploration virtually, giving students interactive tools for concepts such as shapes, place value, and parts and wholes.

Go Math! provides data-driven recommendations for differentiation based on responses to Show What You Know diagnostic assessments, Quick Check formative assessments, Chapter Reviews, and Chapter Test summative assessments. Differentiated instruction resources include Reteach, Challenge, and Additional Practice options that students can use independently. Teachers can assign interactive digital practice and fluency as flexible differentiation options.

The Tabletop Flipchart includes ready-made mini-lessons for teacher-pulled small-group instruction, complete with guiding questions, math discourse support, and English Language Proficiency supports for multilingual learners. Waggle’s personalized, gamified lessons and practice are embedded within Go Math! and can be used during small-group rotations to meet each student’s current skill level.

Go Math! includes WIDA-aligned supports, strategies, and activities at the point of use in every lesson to address the needs of multilingual learners. The Strategies for Multilingual Learners pages and In This Chapter: Key Academic Vocabulary pages provide differentiated guidance across Substantial, Moderate, and Light levels of language support. Language routines embedded within chapters give students structured opportunities to develop mathematical language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The program also includes Multilingual Glossaries with vocabulary terms and definitions in multiple languages, and proficiency-level supports are integrated into the Tabletop Flipchart mini-lessons for small-group instruction. The full program is available in Spanish, making it a viable option for dual-language and Spanish-language immersion classrooms.

Go Math! includes a comprehensive set of student and teacher resources available in both print and digital formats across Grades K–6. Student resources include the Student Edition (available in Spanish), Student Digital Resources on HMH Ed, the Bilingual Math Board, Waggle personalized adaptive practice, and Family Room for parents and caregivers. Teacher resources include the Teacher Edition (available in Spanish), Teacher Digital Resources on Ed, a Quick Start Program Guide, PowerPoint Classroom Presentations for every lesson, and Waggle.

Differentiation and support resources include the Tabletop Flipchart for Small-Group Instruction, Grab-and-Go 2.0 Classroom Manipulatives, Grab-and-Go 2.0 Differentiated Centers Kit, Math on the Spot tutorial videos, Differentiated Instruction Resources for Reteach, Enrich, and Fluency, RTI Tier 2 and Tier 3 Materials, and the Digital Toolbox (iTools).

Go Math! includes program assessments covering summative, formative, benchmark, and performance-based tasks, available digitally on HMH Ed across K–6.

Formative checkpoints, including Show What You Know, Quick Check, Chapter Review, and Chapter Test, provide data-driven recommendations for differentiation and intervention throughout instruction. Assessment data is reported in real time through the Reports section on Ed, allowing teachers to identify student needs immediately and use the Groups tool to configure data-informed small groups and assign targeted content.

Go Math! is delivered through HMH Ed, a web-based learning platform compatible with multiple devices and operating systems, where teachers can plan lessons, assign content, instruct, analyze data, and access professional learning.

Waggle, embedded within Go Math! at point of use, provides personalized adaptive practice in a gamified environment and automatically creates targeted learning pathways based on student performance data. Teachers can assign Waggle content tied to daily Go Math! lessons, create a customized pathway for individual students, or use the auto-assign feature to deliver needs-based practice. The Ed platform also includes the Digital Toolbox (iTools) with virtual manipulatives, Math on the Spot tutorial videos, interactive practice with real-time corrective feedback, and integration options for Canvas^®, Schoology^®, and Clever.

HMH AI Tools on Ed extend the Go Math! curriculum with learning science-backed support. Available AI tools include a Lesson Plan Generator, Scaffold Text, Quiz Generator, Text Translator, Explain Math and Science, Presentation Generator, Vocabulary Scaffolder, and Math Practice Generator, all of which can be used to adapt and personalize lessons while maintaining instructional fidelity.

Go Math! digital subscriptions include guided implementation support to help teachers get started within the first 30 days. All teachers receive a Getting Started Session led by an HMH instructional coach, where they preview their first week of lessons and navigate HMH Ed. Teacher Success Pathways on Ed then provide each teacher with a personalized learning path through program materials, two-week planning, and using data to differentiate—valuable for both new users and teachers who join mid-year.

Teacher’s Corner on Ed provides year-round access to classroom videos, best practices, and live online events with program experts, while Leader’s Corner gives district and school leaders access to professional learning progress reports and resources to support classroom implementation. Extended professional learning options include HMH Coachly, a yearlong digital coaching subscription with access to a dedicated HMH instructional coach, as well as program-aligned courses and live online courses covering math pedagogy and classroom application.
