Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) in Alabama implemented Read 180 with students in Grades 6 through 11 who were identified as needing literacy intervention during the 2022 and 2023 school year. An independent research group, Forge Research Group, conducted a correlational analysis study finding that multiple ELA outcome measures showed significant positive outcomes of literacy growth at TCS. First, Read 180 students demonstrated significant literacy gains on the Growth Measure ELA scale score across all grade levels and within each demographic category. TCS Read 180 students also demonstrated notable growth on the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) Summative ELA assessment, with the percentage of students achieving a Level 3 (proficient) or greater performance level increasing from 9% in spring 2022 to 14% in spring 2023. Furthermore, there was a positive relationship between Read 180 usage and literacy growth. A moderate or high level of Read 180 software usage was associated with 1.4 times greater growth in the Growth Measure ELA scale scores and 32 times greater growth in the ACAP Summative ELA percentile rank.
