Core Curriculum
Katie James, PhD is a staff learning scientist at HMH, where she leads the development of the English language arts (ELA) ontology, applying learning sciences research to model how literacy skills, instruction, curriculum, and assessment connect to support student learning and product innovation.
With more than 15 years of experience spanning learning sciences research, curriculum design, and edtech product development, Katie specializes in disciplinary literacy, curriculum and product design, and mixed-methods research. She holds a PhD in learning sciences from the University of Illinois Chicago and an EdM from Harvard University. Katie was a research assistant professor at Northwestern University, where she conducted design-based research in partnership with Chicago Public Schools and taught undergraduate education courses. She has led federally funded research and evaluation initiatives, including serving as project director of a $4 million education, innovation, and research evaluation study and co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation–funded project.
Katie is dedicated to translating research into practice, helping ensure that educational solutions are grounded in evidence and designed to improve outcomes for students and educators.
