Our sustainable practices
HMH® is committed to making environmentally responsible choices to serve students and educators for years to come. We are always aiming to expand our sustainability program to meet the challenges of today’s world.
-
Carbon footprint
We seek to expand the scope of our sustainability program to meet the challenges of today's world. We track and report out on HMH's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on an annual basis.
-
Climate risks
We know we have an important role to play in helping to combat and mitigate the effects associated with changing environmental conditions.
-
Energy use
We strive to reduce energy consumption at our distribution centers and offices. HMH’s headquarters in Boston has received the LEED® Gold Certification for Existing Buildings™, which is the second highest LEED certification level attainable.
-
Transportation
We aim to transport our products to districts and schools in an environmentally conscious way. In 2025, HMH saved 1,620,675 pounds of CO2 by managing our carbon footprint with intentional transportation methods. HMH’s transportation partners also participate in the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program, which helps measure and improve freight transportation efficiency. In 2025, over 32% of our transportation miles to distribute our products were with SmartWay carriers.
-
Waste management and recycling
Whenever possible, we recycle the excess product and waste generated at our distribution centers and warehouses in an effort to avoid sending recyclable products and other waste to landfills.
Responsible paper practices
Responsibly sourcing, using, and disposing of the paper in our products is key to our sustainability efforts. Our Paper Sourcing and Usage Policy reflects our renewed goals and commitments for 2025–2026, building on the incredible progress made under our prior policies.
