Dr. Joseph S. Davis

Superintendent, Ferguson-Florissant School District, Missouri

Dr. Joseph S. Davis has served as Superintendent of the Ferguson-Florissant School District since July 2015. Dr. Davis began his teaching career in the Wayne County Public Schools in Goldsboro, NC. He taught middle school mathematics before joining the staff at R. L. Fike High School in Wilson, NC as a math teacher. It was during this time at Fike that Dr. Davis decided to shift his graduate work focus from mathematics to school administration at East Carolina University.

He began his administrative career as an Assistant Principal in the Nash Rocky Mount School District at Parker Middle School then returned to Wilson County Schools to serve as an assistant principal at E. T. Beddingfield High School (his Alma Mater). After completing his coursework at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, he served a stint as Executive Director of Student Services in Wilson County Schools before taking on the principalship at Darden-Vick Middle School. While at Darden-Vick, he was a part of the process to secure a bond referendum from the county to build a new middle school, Charles H. Darden Middle, then shortly after converting the former Darden-Vick into an elementary school, Samuel L. Vick Elementary, in which he had the privilege of serving both schools, respectively.

He also served as principal of James B. Hunt High School and as Special Assistant to the Superintendent in Wilson County Schools. Dr. Davis joined the Chicago Public Schools as Deputy Chief of Schools in January of 2012. Dr. Davis became Superintendent of the Washington County Schools District on September 17, 2012, where he served until joining FFSD in 2015

A graduate of Beddingfield High School in Wilson, NC, Dr. Davis attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Computer Science. After receiving his teaching license through East Carolina University, Dr. Davis continued at ECU earning a Master of School Administration Degree (MSA) and an Educational Specialist Degree (Ed.S). Afterwards, he earned a second Masters Degree in Education and a Doctorate in Administration, Planning and Social Policy, both from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Davis, his wife LaTanya and their son Joseph live in Ferguson. Joseph is a student in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.
