Oregon, Ill. Community Unit School District and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Forge Unique Partnership Focused on Long-term Student Achievement

Oregon, Ill.—Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) announced today the formation of an innovative, seven-year partnership with Oregon Community Unit School District for the delivery of K-12 student resources and robust, comprehensive professional development solutions provided by the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Leadership and Learning Center, the Company’s professional development and consulting division. As the district transitions to common core-based learning, HMH will serve as primary educational content provider for its schools and the Center will work directly with educators and community leaders on program implementation and customized training.

To launch the partnership, HMH Leadership and Learning Center consultants have worked directly with local administrators on a high level assessment of district performance, examining areas like leadership, teaching, curriculum implementation, governance, finances and policy in the context of best practices and current research. With this deep approach, which is part of the Center’s Blueprint for Educational Excellence tool, consultants were able to provide a unique and forward-looking action plan to meet Oregon’s needs. The Blueprint framework will be coupled with on-going site visits and training sessions for educators. As a full partner in achieving student success, the Center will regularly evaluate the professional development roadmap and work closely with Oregon leaders to align with the district’s mission and goals.

“Oregon is a progressive, high performing district, and we’re thrilled about this partnership, which strengthens an already dedicated learning community,” said Rob Goll, Vice President, North and Midwest Sales, HMH. “By working exclusively with HMH on content and professional services, Oregon makes us a true partner – we understand the community and its unique needs and have the ability to offer customized solutions to build a foundation for future growth.”

In concert with HMH Leadership and Learning Center guidance, curriculum review and redesign continues this fall, with the first two years of the partnership focusing on English Language Arts and Math, Science and Social Studies will follow. Among the programs adopted are HMH’s proven-effective literacy and math curricula, Journeys Common Core 2014 and Math Expressions Common Core. HMH will collaborate with educators to provide the most current content and adjust programming choices as needed, giving the district complete flexibility.

“We’ve approached our curriculum decisions with a new, strategic lens – one that has allowed us to take a long-term systematic view of our district, to think outside of the box and to work with experts at HMH on holistic, sustainable solutions that will work for students, teachers and families in the district,” said Tom Mahoney, Superintendent, Oregon Community Unit School District. “Our work together is putting down roots for future success, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact for our students and community.”
