Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Announces Standards-Based, Research-Backed Math Expressions Common Core 2013

BOSTON -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the latest edition of one of its popular mathematics programs – Math Expressions Common Core 2013, the only elementary National Science Foundation-funded (NSF) program to completely address the Common Core State Standards, the Standards for Mathematical Practices, and the Common Core Learning Progressions.

The comprehensive K-6 curriculum offers an exciting approach to learning math by balancing inquiry and fluency. Math Expressions Common Core 2013 enables students to build an in-depth understanding of major mathematical ideas, learn and practice critical math strategies, while also challenging them to explore and justify their own ideas. With special emphasis on Mathematical Practices and Mathematical Progressions, teachers create an inquiry-based environment and encourage constructive discussion. Mathematical content and models connect and build across grade levels in Math Expressions Common Core 2013, to provide a progression of teaching and learning that aligns precisely with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

Leveled writing prompts throughout the program sharpen students’ critical thinking and reasoning skills. The program offers differentiated math instruction for all learners, and includes intervention, on-level, and challenge variations to support classroom needs.

A digital component to the program offers an eStudent Activity Book, which gives students and parents 24/7 access to educational content and provides for anytime, anywhere learning. Also included in the digital offerings are interactive whiteboard activities and digital manipulatives; Soar to Success Math Response to Intervention; and built-in professional development in the eTeacher Edition.

“Providing students in the United States with the necessary skills to compete worldwide requires great math instruction,” said Bethlam Forsa, Executive Vice President, Global Product and Content Development, HMH. “Teaching math is hard. Getting students engaged can be difficult. We recognize this challenge and Math Expressions Common Core 2013 provides students and teachers with multiple mediums and targeted materials.”

Authored by Dr. Karen Fuson, a respected and well-known researcher and mathematics scholar at Northwestern University, Math Expressions Common Core 2013 was designed with an emphasis on international math standards and the approaches of high-achieving international programs.
