Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Unveils Series of Innovative Products and Solutions to Propel Teaching and Learning Forward at ISTE 2011

PHILADELPHIA – Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today unveiled an array of new products and services for all education stakeholders including parents, students, teachers and administrators at The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2011 Conference and Exposition. From consumer-focused educational games for parents and children to assessment and individualized learning technology platforms for educators, these diverse offerings showcase the myriad ways HMH is driving the continuous cycle of teaching and learning inside and outside of the classroom.

At the annual event, HMH will also rally attendees to join the company’s Global Education Challenge –designed to identify and incubate game-changing ideas for solutions with the potential to dramatically improve student outcomes in K–12 education. Hosted on a collaborative online platform, the HMH Global Education Challenge (www.globaleducationchallenge.com) enables entrants to submit an idea for evaluation by the community and a panel of expert judges for a chance to win from a pool of $250,000 in cash and prizes. Winning ideas will also be considered for development and ongoing financial investment from HMH.

“The collection of products and services on exhibit at this year’s conference exemplifies HMH’s mission to meet the needs of the entire K-12 community with cognitively rich, differentiated teaching and learning resources that boost personalized learning and increase student achievement,” said Michael Muldowney, Interim CEO of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “We are thrilled to be part of this exciting annual event.”

The featured products and solutions in HMH’s ISTE 2011 21st Century Classroom include among others:

  • HMH Instructional Materials for Tablets and eReaders HMH will be showcasing a dynamic hands-on demonstration of its latest e-textbook technology, as thirty of the Company’s most popular programs will now be available and optimized for tablet and e-reader devices. This broad scale deployment of textbooks in portable format will help illustrate the value of mobile learning for teachers taking their first steps into digital education and also highlight the associated cost savings for administrators.

  • Pinpoint Integrated Education Suite The Pinpoint Integrated Education Suite is the first fully-customizable education platform to help schools unite the disparate parts of their technology systems and improve upon enterprise weaknesses unique to each district by combining learning management, curriculum management, professional development, assessment, analytics, student information systems (SISs) and grading modules. Districts may have some of these tools but need others, or have elements that are becoming obsolete with age. In either case, Pinpoint Suite can provide part or all of the components required to meet the varied needs of each district. The suite is also flexible enough to work with any content vendor being used today as well as alternative vendors that may be introduced in the future.

  • Carmen Sandiego Games for Wii™  Carmen Sandiego Adventures in Math: The Lady Liberty Larceny is the first in a series of math-focused games from HMH and The Learning Company, a division of HMH, that will be available for Wii™ and its WiiWare™ service. In each of the five upcoming Carmen titles, the player assumes the role of an ACME Detective Agent who is hot on the trail of Carmen’s henchmen after they steal one of the world’s major landmarks. In the first title in the series,
The Lady Liberty Larceny, thieves sneak into New York City to take the Statue of Liberty. In order to bring each of the villains to justice, players will be tasked with completing 10 different math puzzles throughout the game. HMH will have the game available for play at Booth #2311, as well as a live-action version of the game designed for attendees to win great prizes.

HMH Fuse™: Algebra 1 App The HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 app is the first-ever full-curriculum algebra app created for the iPad.   The app is designed to deliver Algebra 1 curriculum in a way that engages tech−savvy 21st century students.
