Hawaii Department of Education Selects Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to Provide Assessment Tools Critical for 21st Century Learning

BOSTON -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced that its Riverside division has been selected by the Hawaii Department of Education to provide assessment tools for the state’s English Language Arts and Mathematics curriculum. As part of its Race to the Top initiative, the Department chose Riverside’s Assess2Know® item bank to prepare school districts for compliance with Common Core State Standards.

The Assess2Know solution provides educators with a tool to measure student progress toward instructional objectives, allowing for targeted intervention and remediation for grades one through high school. It provides Hawaii’s educators with a common tool to inform instruction, increase teachers’ capacity to create, deliver and score classroom assessments, and most importantly is aligned to the Common Core.

“As the Common Core State Standards have gained approval from most states, administrators across the country are looking for resources that will help them understand how their existing curriculum is preparing students to meet these rigorous requirements,” said Jim Nicholson, President of Riverside, the testing and assessment division of HMH. “We remain committed to ensuring Hawaii’s educators and students successfully transition to these new standards, providing accurate snapshots of where each district should focus its efforts.”

The Assess2Know Benchmark item bank includes thousands of high-quality measures that are tightly-aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The item bank enables educators to create their own assessments according to their district’s pacing guide by using an online test generator, and also allows them to construct tests aligned to individual state standards.
