Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and The Learning Company Donate More Than $100,000 to Covenant House as Part of NBC Today Show's "Lend a Hand" Road Trip

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - As part of NBC’s TODAY  “Lend a Hand” charity road trip, global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) and one of its consumer-focused divisions, The Learning Company, today donated $95,000 in learning materials and training, as well as a $10,000 cash donation to West Virginia-based Covenant House.

The “Lend a Hand” series takes Al Roker across the country to help small charities that work toward improving conditions in their communities. Today’s donation to Covenant House — a non-profit dedicated to creating social change through advocacy and education — was kept a surprise until this morning's airing of the live program in Charleston.

“HMH and The Learning Company are honored to support the work of Covenant House. As a global education leader, extending our core expertise to create positive social impact in local communities is extremely important to us as a company,” said Josef Blumenfeld, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs for HMH, who was on-site in Charleston for the donation. “We are committed to improving teaching and learning environments around the world through our corporate citizenship initiatives.”

HMH’s donation of learning materials comprises a wide range of titles for ages 4–18 including Curious George classics, pre-teen and young adult favorites and even cookbooks that parents and children can read together, as well as The Learning Company's series of pre-K–1 educational workbooks. Featuring Curious George and Reader Rabbit, these robust, resource-filled workbooks demonstrate The Learning Company's new approach to early skill-building and concept reinforcement.  By fostering collaborative early learning experiences, they aim to create a path for children's lifelong discovery and achievement.

As part of its corporate citizenship initiative, HMH delivers three million books to countries around the globe annually, through responsive and proactive donations. All HMH donations are aimed at supporting the educational goals of the US and developing countries to meet the needs of under-served students. At its core, HMH's Book Donation Program supports integral business objectives while providing essential access to learning materials for the worlds' next generation of students.
