School Districts in Kansas and Colorado Become the First to Customize Mathematics Coursework Through Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Custom Solutions Program

BOSTON — Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced that the Custom Solutions editions of its award-winning Holt McDougal Middle School Mathematics, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 programs have been adopted by Lawrence Public Schools, in Lawrence, Kansas and Colorado Springs District 11 in Colorado – making them the first in the country to implement the innovative course customization tool.  Both school districts used the Custom Solutions engine to create tailored programs to match their math curriculum.

Educators in Lawrence are set to adopt the Integrated Algebra Grade 8 custom solution, which blends a full course of instruction in Algebra 1 content with other important topics from the Kansas 8th grade mathematics standards, including computation with rational numbers, two-dimensional geometry topics, and geometric measurement.  Educators in Colorado Springs will take a similar approach by implementing District 11 Algebra 2, a custom solution second year algebra course that includes additional review of prerequisite topics often tested on popular college entrance exams.

“A huge factor for choosing HMH was that our team quickly became very excited to have the option of customization. We have been able to customize the scope and sequence of our text’s chapters so it truly fits our district curriculum map for Algebra 2 rather than having to change our map to fit the text,” said Dave Sawtelle, K-12 Mathematics Specialist at Colorado Springs School District 11.  “Our teachers chose HMH’s 2012 Algebra 2 for the high quality of both the curriculum and the ancillary support materials, especially the web-based instructional resources.  I have been most impressed by the sophistication of HMH Custom Solutions and pleased with the levels of support and service that we have received from HMH.”

Custom Solutions represents a breakthrough in educational publishing – a tool that allows school districts the unique opportunity to develop course materials that match their curriculum guidelines, including only the information they want and in the sequence they choose.  HMH Custom Solutions content experts work with each educator to build a curriculum that fully adheres to their districts learning objectives. The final solution includes a fully customized Student Edition and Teacher Edition plus matching online edition and all supporting resources according to the customized scope and sequence.

“No two classrooms are the same, so it is critical for any successful education company to work with its teachers to assemble the most effective course materials possible,” said Mike Lavelle, President, HMH Education Group.  “Streamlining this process will yield more effective classrooms.”
