HOUSTON – Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) has worked with leaders in the Catholic community across the country to develop Journeys Common Core: Catholic Identity Edition, the only Common Core State Standards (CCSS) aligned reading program for grades K-6 naturally infused with Catholic values and principles. HMH is showcasing the new program, which was designed specifically to support CCSS implementation in Catholic schools, at the National Catholic Education Annual Conference in Houston April 2-4 (Booth 409).
Developed with the guidance of a diocesan work group and the renowned Journeys authorship team—led by Irene Fountas, Shane Templeton, and Common Core consultant Carol Jago—the Catholic Identity Edition thoughtfully combines the academic rigor of Journeys Common Core, HMH’s popular, proven effective reading program, with a Catholic worldview, fostering academic excellence in a faith-filled environment as defined in the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Schools.
Journeys Common Core: Catholic Identity Edition provides educators with weekly suggestions that incorporate Catholic values and principles into each lesson’s reading, writing, and speaking/listening instruction. Curriculum is aligned to the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching, and reading selections from the Holy Bible and Catholic literature strengthen students’ knowledge base and understanding of Catholicism. High-quality exemplar texts—the most in any reading program on the market—ensure that students are prepared to succeed on PARCC and SBAC assessments and on track to read college- and career-level texts.
In a gold standard study, students using Journeys consistently outperformed students using other programs in key areas of reading. The curriculum model, adopted in schools across the nation, reflects a fully integrated, in-depth approach to CCSS alignment, offering educators a versatile collection of resources to get students thinking, discussing, and writing about text. Journeys Common Core employs cutting-edge digital learning tools from mobile apps and content to interactive whiteboard lessons and online teaching and assessment components designed to support student growth and ensure teacher success.
