NEW YORK – Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has announced that for the first time it will add The Best American Food Writing to its collection of Best American anthologies. The food writing edition will be the tenth category in the Best American series, joining The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Science and Nature Writing and The Best American Essays, among others.
The inaugural edition of The Best American Food Writing will be released in October 2018 and will be guest edited by the legendary food critic, author and editor Ruth Reichl. Reichl’s prestigious career has spanned every genre of food media including magazines, books, television and newspapers. Her invaluable contributions to the world of food writing have earned her six James Beard Foundation Awards. The series will be edited by Silvia Killingsworth, editor of The Awl and The Hairpin and former managing editor of The New Yorker.
“The explosion of variety and quality in American food culture has had an impact far beyond restaurants--from television to magazines to online media,” says Bruce Nichols, Senior Vice President and Publisher, HMH Trade Publishing. “It comes as no surprise that the quality and variety of writing about food has exploded, too. We are excited to add the Best American Food Writing to our venerable Best American program, adding a mug full of energy with a large handful of spices.”
