In sixth grade math, students lay the groundwork for success in concepts and skills relating to algebra. The Common Core Standards focus on four critical math concepts in sixth grade math:

  • Understanding and applying the concepts of rate and ratio
  • Understanding different types of numbers, including negative numbers
  • Creating and using expressions and equations
  • Interpreting data and developing an understanding of statistical thinking

Sixth Grade Math Help Checklist

To determine if your sixth grade math student is in need of math help, ask yourself:

  • Can your child proficiently divide fractions?
  • Is your child able to apply the concept of ratio and rate to a wide variety of problems?
  • Does your child understand basic concepts for success in algebra, such as negative numbers and graphing?
  • Can your child create and expression or equation from a word problem? Does your child have a basic understanding of how variables work, and how to solve simple equations?
  • Does your child understand basic statistical concepts, such as creating and interpreting data displays, median, mean, and variability?
