Address students' social and emotional needs with built-in activities and support.

Aligned to CASEL Competencies

Into Literature focuses on the core competencies of social and emotional learning as developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Consult the Program Guide for more information about how Into Literature embeds meaningful SEL connections, activities, and instruction.

Facilitate Courageous Conversations

Strategies for navigating difficult conversations are provided for both teachers and students—from Do’s and Don’ts for the teacher guiding heated topics to tips for students on being respectful, listening with an open mind, and summarizing points of disagreement.

Explore SEL Activities and Support in Every Unit and Lesson

Into Literature includes unit- and lesson-level SEL support. Teachers can use topics and selections to reinforce instruction of SEL competencies, or they can use SEL concepts to encourage students to analyze selections through a different lens.

Take It Further with an SEL-Focused Community Read

Social and emotional learning is especially effective when a whole school or whole grade commits to the process. Based on Steve Pemberton’s memoir A Chance in the World, this integrated SEL curriculum is designed to engage students and bring communities together while fostering awareness of and growth in the CASEL core competencies.
