    • Next Generation Science Standards and ScienceFusion

      ScienceFusion—Your Pathway to Next Generation Learning

      The Next Generation Science Standards were finalized in April of 2013. The K–12 standards were developed in a collaborative, state-led process managed by Achieve (( - independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit education reform organization). NGSS are based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council.

      ScienceFusion was built upon this same framework for science education. Because of this and because inquiry, which is at the heart of the Performance Expectations, is integral to ScienceFusion, ScienceFusion can serve as a transition program to help teachers move from where they are at currently—working from existing science standards—toward NGSS, a progression that even Achieve says will take some time. HMH plans to fully revise ScienceFusion in a deliberate fashion, so that by the time teachers have grasped the truly revolutionary implications of NGSS, we will have a program ready to meet their evolving needs.

      Simplify Planning and Instruction with Leveled Reading Teacher Guides

      With each eight-page Teacher Guide for every Leveled Reader, you will find instruction to help students think deeply about the text, enabling them to respond to reading through writing and additional activities while working with the text.

    • Digital Curriculum

      Science programs have historically provided companion technology, such as an online student edition, to support a textbook. However, while today's online books provide 24/7 access to textbook content, they do not provide the necessary online learning environment. When a student goes online to learn science, not to read science, a digital lesson should be designed and look different from a lesson in a book.

      Inquiry Lessons and Inquiry Flipcharts (Grades K–5)

      Inquiry lessons, found in every unit, have a corresponding inquiry flipchart page and virtual lab. This provides a unique multimodal approach for learning science concepts and skills.

      The inquiry flipcharts deliver three levels—directed, guided, and independent—of hands-on inquiry for every lesson. The laminated flipcharts can be placed on a table for centers or small group areas, so students can work as lab partners or in collaborative groups.

      The middle grades lab program is designed to include activities that address a variety of student levels, inquiry levels, time availability, and materials.     • STEM in ScienceFusion

      There’s no substitute for actually experiencing a process or task. That’s why ScienceFusion builds STEM units, STEM activities, and STEM hands-on labs into the curriculum.

      Grades 1–5

      For each grade level, Unit 2 is dedicated to the engineering design process. ScienceFusion provides STEM lessons and hands-on activities that incorporate and develop 21st-century skills and are rooted in the science being taught in the lesson. In every unit beyond Units 1 and 2, there is a feature in the Student Edition called Engineering and Technology. This focuses on an aspect of Engineering and also includes a specific technology as an application of science. A STEM activity accompanies the Engineering and Technology feature, and this activity appears in the Inquiry Flipchart. The activity gives students an opportunity to apply the Engineering Design Process.

      The Engineering Design process used throughout Grades 1–5 focuses on these steps:

      Grades 6–8

      Each module provides four pages, on a unit level, of STEM activities designed to provide background, a challenge, and an activity that connects students to the engineering design process.
