The intention of this book is to demystify performance assessments in the world of assessments and to provide a resource that not only justifies the importance of performance assessments but guides readers through the development of a performance assessment that can be used in classrooms, buildings, or districts. Readers will learn what standards-based performance assessments are, why they should be included in an assessment system, how to create them, how to score them, and how to use the results to improve instruction and student learning in a classroom, building, or district.
This handbook has three sections, which are followed by an appendix of resources containing documents and resources to support the creation of standards-based performance assessments.
Section one of this book consists of two chapters that lay the foundation for incorporating standards-based performance assessments. Section two is the heart of the book. It consists of 10 chapters which detail the steps to creating a standards-based performance assessment. Section three of the book shows readers how to take a different look at standards-based performance assessments.
The Appendix includes sample performance assessments at various grade levels in a variety of subject areas. It also provides readers with several tools to support the development of performance assessments, including Bloom's revised taxonomy, roles students can assume, and products and performances they can complete.
