### Focused on the Common Core State Standards

Math Expressions Common Core focuses on the priority core concepts at each grade level, identified by the Common Core State Standards, to build in-depth understanding of major mathematical ideas. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are incorporated into all of the lessons in the Math Expressions program, and the Learning Progressions are referenced throughout the Teacher's Edition.

### Comprehensive and Proven

Based on the NSF-funded* Children’s Math World project and over ten years of research, Math Expressions Common Core is proven to be effective in raising student achievement.

### A Fresh Approach to Elementary Mathematics

Hands-on and inquiry driven, Math Expressions Common Core teaches students how to represent solutions and explain their answers. This approach helps develop problem-solving and reasoning skills.

### Differentiated for All Learners

The strong emphasis in Math Expressions Common Core on representation and discussion opens up the world of mathematics to all learners. Every lesson includes intervention, on-level, and challenge differentiation to support classroom needs.

### Content and Learning Progressions

Math Expressions Common Core focuses on the priority core concepts at each grade level, identified by the Common Core State Standards, to build in-depth understanding of major mathematical ideas. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are incorporated into all of the lessons in the Math Expressions program.

### Inquiry-based Learning

In Math Expressions, teachers create an inquiry environment and encourage constructive discussion. Students invent, question, model, represent, and explore but also learn and practice important math strategies. Mathematics content and models connect and build across the grade levels in Math Expressions to provide a progression of teaching and learning that aligns precisely with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

### From Research to Results

The Learning Progressions for the Common Core State Standards provide the important connections between mathematics research and the Standards. The Learning Progressions are incorporated into the Math Expressions CommonCore Teacher's Editions.

For more information on the importance of the learning progression to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, download the Learning Progressions Documents for the Common Core Math Standards from the Institute for Mathematics and Education at the University of Arizona.

### Standards for Mathematical Practice

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Content indicate what concepts, skills, and problem solving children should learn. The Standards for Mathematical Practice indicate how students should demonstrate understanding. These Mathematical Practices are embedded directly into the Student Edition and Teacher's Edition for each unit in Math Expressions.

### Math Talk and the Mathematical Practices

Math Talk is a key feature in every Math Expressions lesson. Math Talk suggestions are an important vehicle used to encourage discussion that supports all eight Mathematical Practices.

• ##### Correlations

Correlation guides indicate where—and in many cases how—the Common Core Standards are addressed in the program. Download a PDF to see specifics at a particular level.

• ##### Math Expressions Virtual Sampling

In Math Expressions Common Core, teachers create an inquiry environment and encourage constructive discussion. Math Expressions starts at the students' level and continually elicits their thinking; provides visual and linguistic supports to move them rapidly to understanding; and ends with extended fluency practice and application while continuing the emphasis on understanding and explaining.

### Support for Teaching the Common Core

Math Expressions Common Core provides the math background for teachers to understand and successfully implement the Common Core State Standards.

### Begin with Math Background

Each unit begins with Math Background for the teacher connected to current research related to the topic being taught and lesson-by-lesson descriptions of how the instructional models in the unit are used to teach the Common Core State Standards. Specific examples from the lessons and their relation to the Standards for Mathematical Practice are included for each unit. Math Background for the unit also relates the Learning Progressions for the Common Core State Standards to the lessons in the unit, showing how the standards build within and across grades.

### Comprehensive Lesson Support

The Common Core State Standards taught in each lesson are clearly identified and the Standards for Mathematical Practice are integrated directly into the lesson plan at point of use. Each lesson includes a complete description of the activity and what to expect from the students, as well as explanations, sample questions, and student/teacher dialogs for Math Talk. The Teacher's Edition also provides point-of-use Teaching Notes including Math Background, Classroom Management, Differentiation, and ELL strategies.

### Built-in Professional Development

With Math Expressions Common Core Professional Development Podcasts, teachers can download section overviews and detailed instructional content created by teachers from across the country. Podcasts are accessible directly from the eTeacher's Edition.

• ##### Integrated Technology

The Math Expressions Common Core elementary mathematics program includes digital, 21st-century learning tools for both students and teachers.

### Plan and Teach

#### Osmo Gaming System

Osmo™ is a unique gaming accessory for iPad® (version 2 and higher). The Osmo Numbers game can be used for additional practice; to build basic skills and fluency in counting, addition, subtraction, and multiplication; to challenge students who have already mastered content; and to motivate students who enjoy learning in a game-like setting. Students benefit from familiarity—from using the same manipulatives (HMH Secret Code Cards and Counters) in both Osmo games and in daily math activities as part of Math Expressions.

### Dr. Karen Fuson

Dr. Karen Fuson, Professor Emerita from Northwestern University, has spent more than 25 years researching different methods of teaching and learning mathematics.

One project, Children’s Math Worlds, was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and became the basis for the Math Expressions program. Dr. Fuson’s national and international research has been cited in numerous math publications including the National Research Council’s Adding It Up and How Students Learn Mathematics in the Classroom. Dr. Fuson’s work with the Common Core State Standards includes serving as a member of the feedback committee and as a member of the writing team for the Common Core Learning Progressions.

Math Expressions Common Core reflects the most recent research on effective math instruction and fits the learning progressions, the core grade-level goals, and the dual focus on understanding and fluency of the Common Core State Standards.

### Program Research

Math Expression Common Core is the only U.S. curriculum developed using the methods of learning science design research. It is based on the research results of the Children’s Math Worlds (CMW) NSF-funded research project. Both the program and the research have a focus on conceptual understanding intertwined with the other components of math proficiency.

### Proven Results

Math Expressions was recently part of a large scale study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to determine the effectiveness of four elementary math curricula on student academic achievement. The results of the study indicate that the “curriculum mattered”—Math Expressions students were performing at higher levels of math achievement when compared to students using other programs.
