      A Bridge to Vocabulary Acquisition

Earobics creates a language-rich learning environment to build vocabulary.

Effective reading programs bridge the gap between students of different socioeconomic statuses and expose students to oral language experiences and new vocabulary, while developing decoding skills and fluency. Earobics recognizes that vocabulary acquisition is as crucial to early readers as the development of decoding skills.

Earobics instruction immerses students in a language-rich learning environment that develops oral language and expands vocabulary. Activities in the Earobics Vocabulary and Communication Teacher's Guide build students' ability to use expressive, figurative language, while introducing them to appropriate conventions of conversation and new vocabulary. Through repeated reading experiences, Earobics exposes students to words that researchers know to be effective in vocabulary development, while also building their vocabulary through decoding exercises focused on prefixes and suffixes.

Effective vocabulary instruction unveils new words in a variety of contexts. The multimedia and correlated texts used in Earobics ensure that students encounter and use new words in multiple contexts, and include lesson plans that integrate characters from Earobics software into teacher-guided oral language development activities.

Reading Literature and Informational Text to Build Comprehension

Shared and guided reading activities target comprehension

Teaching reading skills in isolation does not constitute effective literacy instruction. Reading is an act of constructing and sharing meaning and the purpose of reading is comprehension.

Based on cognitive research that asserts that reading is a purposeful and active process, the comprehension instruction supported by Earobics introduces students to a wide array of comprehension strategies. The program includes shared and guided reading activities in which the teacher models the use of background knowledge, context clues, and graphic organizers, and guides students in practicing these strategies with a range of leveled text.

Earobics activities that teach students comprehension strategies reflect the research of a number of reading experts who have observed the importance of introducing systematic and explicit comprehension instruction into elementary reading programs.

      Phonemic Awareness Instruction

Early concentration on teaching phonemic awareness can improve students' reading and spelling, regardless of their reading readiness experiences or primary language. These research conclusions drove the design of Earobics software, which uses adaptive technology to provide students with self-paced, systematic, and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness that automatically adjusts to their individual skill levels.

Phonemic awareness instruction delivered by Earobics software is supported with classroom activities and the use of manipulatives. The Earobics Approach to Fluency

Reading out loud is a key factor in developing fluency.

The consequences of students' failure to develop reading fluency early on can be great. They might not only fail to make the third-grade transition from "learning to read to reading to learn," but could also fall further behind their peers, and eventually lose interest in reading.

Earobics classroom resources help students develop their ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Earobics includes texts that improve students' repertoire of sight words and build their decoding skills, while providing them with opportunities for repeated oral reading. It also features multimedia instructional tools that model fluent reading for students and allow them to participate in technology-assisted reading.

Effective fluency instruction includes two key elements:

      • Students read aloud with some form of support and direction, whether it comes from a teacher, peer group, partner, or multimedia technology
      • Students receive opportunities for repeated practice with skill-appropriate texts that are both decodable and challenging

Earobics assessment software provides assessment that follows the question types developed by the Common Core Assessment Consortiums for all five areas of reading. Question types require students to dig deeper, engage with text, and show mastery of the Common Core. New for © 2014, students can create a voice recording during their fluency testing. This recording is stored for the teacher, allowing for more flexibility in testing and better accuracy in assessing fluency.

      Initial Implementation Trainings

Group sessions prepare teachers to implement the Earobics programs with confidence and ease. The training day includes discussion of strategies and best practices, hands-on interaction with the software, integration of classroom materials, discussion of scheduling and implementation, goal setting, and modeling of class activities and lesson use in alignment with school's existing technology, parameters, and curriculum.

      Advanced Implementation Trainings

These sessions take the initial implementation training for Earobics to deeper, more specialized levels to maximize effectiveness of use for teachers who have been already been using the programs. Participants collaborate to share and develop strategies, best practices and hands-on experience creating customized materials, schedules, assessments, learning pathways, data analysis, reports and lesson plans to address the needs of special student populations.
