In second grade math, students deepen and extend their understanding of concepts introduced in first grade. The Common Core Standards focus on four critical math concepts in second grade math:

  • Understanding place value relationships with numbers up to 1,000
  • Building computational fluency with addition and subtraction
  • Using metric and customary units of measure
  • Describing and analyzing shapes

Second Grade Math Help Checklist

To determine if your second grade math student is in need of math help, ask yourself:

  • Does your child understand multi-digit numbers and that they are made of hundreds, tens, and ones?
  • Can your child solve addition and subtraction problems with numbers up to 1,000? Is he or she able to use place value to help add and subtract proficiently?
  • Is your child able to measure and estimate lengths in centimeters and inches?
  • Can your child represent and interpret data?
  • Is your child comfortable describing and analyzing shapes using sides and angles?
