Boston -- Nov 1st, 2010 -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s (HMH) Riverside Publishing group today announced the inclusion of two of its renowned assessment tools on the coveted National Center on Response to Intervention’s (RTI) 2010 List of Screening Tools. Educators and practitioners use screening tools to identify academically at-risk students through scientifically-based assessments. This list of products, screened by the National Center on Response to Intervention’s Technical Review Committee, is intended to assist educators and practitioners in making informed decisions about scientifically-based tools that best meet their individual needs.

“This listing highlights the appropriateness of ITBS and GMRT as research-based universal screening instruments that fit well into a district’s intervention program,” said Jim Nicholson, President, Riverside Publishing. “The Center’s list draws attention to school-wide screening and the importance of reliability and validity. Both ITBS and GMRT are known for their ability to identify those students who may be in need of intervention.”

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills Reading Comprehension and Mathematics tests are valid and reliable assessments that can serve as screening tools. Additionally, the ITBS offers educators and practitioners a diagnostic look at students’ progress in key academic areas, enabling them to then utilize data to create intervention groups and drive curricular decisions.

The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests contain testing material that is sensitive to a wide range of reading abilities and special interests, allowing for accurate classification of at-risk students. With the flexibility and efficiency of the GMRT, educators can assess students’ general reading achievement, organize them into leveled reading groups and provide tailored instruction.
