Boston -- Mar 11th, 2010 -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced that Shane Templeton will join Houghton Mifflin Harcourt at the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) conference on March 12, 2010, to share the latest research and innovations in the field of adolescent literacy. Dr. Templeton will discuss best practices in adolescent literacy as well as his contribution to Earobics REACH, a breakthrough software-based program for adolescent literary, during a special conference event hosted by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

“We are pleased that Dr. Templeton will join us at the NASSP conference to discuss his part in developing the groundbreaking Earobics REACH literacy program,” said Mike Lavelle, K–12 President, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “We are confident that the program will give teachers the tools and strategies needed to actively engage students and positively impact their literacy performance.”

Earobics REACH is a revolutionary, research-proven approach to building reading skills in critical upper elementary, middle school and high school grades. Designed to meet the needs of students reading below grade level, this software-based reading solution provides a powerful, flexible and highly interactive student experience that motivates even reluctant learners. Based on a comprehensive initial assessment and ongoing progress monitoring, Earobics REACH provides instruction tailored to each student’s specific needs. Integrated assessments automatically determine appropriate program placement, and ongoing progress monitoring stimulates student self-evaluation by encouraging the question, “What do I know?” The program, specifically designed to engage students in grades 4 and higher, increases proficiency and accelerates learning in ways never before imagined.

Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of Literacy Studies in the Department of Educational Specialties at the University of Nevada, Reno. A former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary school levels, Dr. Templeton has published research on developmental word knowledge among elementary, middle and high school students. He is widely published in a number of research and practitioner journals, and is co-author of Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction and Vocabulary Their Way: Word Study for Middle and Secondary Students. In addition to co-authoring Earobics REACH, Dr. Templeton is co-author of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Journeys program and senior author of its Spelling and Vocabulary program.

Since 1987, Dr. Templeton has been a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. He also serves as an educational consultant for the American Heritage Children’s Dictionary and authored the foreword to Curious George’s Dictionary, published in 2008.
