Boston -- Apr 6th, 2010 -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Trade and Reference Publishers commemorated the 20th anniversary of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried with an unprecedented webcast to more than 300 U.S. classrooms on Wednesday, March 24. O’Brien and Nathaniel Fick, author of One Bullet Away and CEO of the Center for a New American Security, spoke before two Advanced Placement English classes at Washington DC’s Cardozo High School and fielded questions from students around the country.

The webcast was part of a first-ever integrated hardcover, paperback and eBook marketing campaign to promote the backlist classic, originally published in 1990.

In addition to fielding student questions, O’Brien read a passage from The Things They Carried and discussed the book’s anniversary, war literature and current US military involvements in an interview with Fick.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published O’Brien’s entire webcast online for use by educators, book groups, veterans, community reading organizers, librarians and the general public. To view or download the webcast, visit www.hmhbooks.com/timobrien.

The Things They Carried became an instant classic upon its release in 1990, and in the twenty years since has become essential course material in high schools and universities nationwide. The Things They Carried is also included in the National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read program.
