Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Turnitin combine innovative technologies to promote creativity and original writing in the digital age

Boston -- Oct 14th, 2010 -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) has announced its partnership with iParadigms LLC, creators of renowned plagiarism prevention service Turnitin®. The companies will be joining forces to teach students the importance of original and creative writing by including Turnitin’s OriginalityCheck™ in HMH’s newest language arts program, Write Source®. OriginalityCheck, a program that assists educators by scanning students’ work for possible plagiarism, will be used to encourage student users of Write Source to avoid unoriginal writing and embrace creativity.

“The collaboration of Write Source and OriginalityCheck will help students learn the importance of original writing while having fun,” said James O’Neill, Senior Vice President, K-12 Portfolio Management for HMH. “We are living in a digital age in which everyone with access to a computer has at their disposal a wealth of knowledge on the Internet. It is important that students learn how to use this resource to cultivate their own voice without plagiarizing.”

The Write Source program integrates the digital world into the language arts curriculum. Students create their own avatar, which they use to navigate and interact with the virtual Write Source world. The program uses innovative interactive features to help students of every learning style master grammar and writing skills with engaging games, videos and online work text. Students are also able to publish their work to the online site to share with other users around the world. The Write Source environment makes learning language arts more fun and engaging for students at all levels.

OriginalityCheck will be used by teachers to check the written work students submit to the Write Source site for unoriginal content or improper citation. The program uses a dynamic database of more than13 billion indexed web pages and more than 135 million archived student papers to create a report for each student paper that highlights problematic passages and provides matching sources. Educators use the report to inspire students to cultivate better writing skills and learn the importance of proper research and citation methods.

“With more than 4,000 secondary institutions worldwide as customers, our commitment to helping teachers efficiently evaluate written work and provide more ‘teachable moments’ has always been strong,” says Chris Caren, President and CEO of iParadigms. “We expect educators and students to benefit enormously from the synergy created by two global leaders collaborating to offer one comprehensive solution.”

Educators especially can benefit from this collaboration. The time spent checking suspicious passages can instead be dedicated to providing students with more thorough, helpful feedback. Educators will also have more opportunities to teach students about the importance of proper citation and original content using the Write Source-provided SMART® Technologies.
