Corporate Social Responsibility

As the global leader in K–12 education, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt holds itself to the highest standard of social responsibility. Beyond elevating student outcomes, we are committed to improving teaching and learning environments by sharing our materials, expertise, influence and leadership with individuals and communities around the world.

As a burgeoning CSR leader, HMH is continually engaging with public, private, and nonprofit organizations to develop a dynamic approach to education challenges and to ensure that our social impact is as meaningful and lasting as possible.

Our CSR program comprises four pillars:

Corporate Citizenship

Currently, we focus our corporate citizenship efforts on book donations, grants, and volunteerism. HMH is committed to donating three million books annually to under-served students who lack access to quality educational materials. With the assistance of partners like First Book, the Sabre Foundation and World Vision, we have coordinated several large-scale book donations domestically and internationally. We also give to a wide range of organizations in the communities where HMH operates and serves.

Volunteerism is an especially important element of our corporate citizenship, as our employees possess unique skill sets that are highly valued by the social and education sectors. Skills-based volunteering provides the mutual benefit of professional development for employees at every level.

School Improvement

By complementing the offerings of our school improvement group, the Leadership and Learning Center, with CSR's parent and community-engagement expertise, our multi-level CSR school turnaround program will increase the success and sustainability of our efforts at the national, district, and school levels.

Global Teacher Effectiveness

As a company with rich professional development assets and expertise, we have the power to significantly increase teacher quality around the world. We are currently working to combine several of our core expertise areas—including training, technology and assessment—with our acclaimed curriculum authors to launch a world-class teacher effectiveness initiative.

Research and Evaluation

We are increasing our investment in research to improve the quality of our product and service offerings, as well as to demonstrate their positive educational outcomes for teachers, administrators, parents and students.
