21,000 middle and high school students to benefit from McDougal Littell Literature

Boston -- Sep 1st, 2010 -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced that after careful review and consideration, Boston Public Schools (BPS) has chosen the Company’s McDougal Littell Literature for its first new literature adoption in 13 years. Using McDougal Littell Literature’s proven methods, local students will analyze fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and media across clusters of standards. Special features even support visual and media literacy, along with research strategies.

“This program combines rigorous content with strategies and tools to support all adolescent students,” said Angela Sangeorge, Executive Director of Curriculum Development and Literacy for Boston Public Schools. “Teachers and administrators overwhelmingly selected this program because it combines a selection of quality literacy with informational text supported by technological tools that will support the goals of the Boston Public Schools,” she added.

McDougal Littell Literature has been selected for BPS students as they align with common core standards. The program was chosen by Boston English/Language Arts (ELA) teachers because they found it to be essential in teaching literacy to both middle and high school students.

“As a Boston-based company, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has a valuable relationship with Boston Public Schools,” said Mike Lavelle, K–12 President, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “McDougal Littell Literature has been a proven literacy resource in schools all over the nation, and now students in Boston can also benefit from its unique approach.”

McDougal Littell Literature is crafted to give students an engaging perspective on the questions and insights that literature provides. Boston Public Schools believes the program will enhance students’ literary skills while increasing their success on assessments.
